                                           Pilates Books We Recommend

EXPERIENCE... FEEL... CONNECT ... MAKE TIME FOR YOUR SOUL

A Buying Guide Pilates has a much shorter written history than yoga, but the books that have shaped it are just as varied — from the founder's own original text to modern, accessible guides for building a home practice. These titles are consistently among the most recommended and best-selling Pilates books available plus I've thrown in a couple of my favourites for good measure.

Return to Life Through Contrology — Joseph Pilates The original source text, written by the founder of the method himself. This is less a step-by-step exercise guide and more a statement of Pilates' philosophy — his thinking on posture, breath, and "Contrology" as he called it, alongside the original matwork sequence. Essential reading for anyone who wants to understand where the method actually came from, though it's not the easiest starting point if you're brand new to Pilates.

Pilates: Body in Motion — Alycea Ungaro A genuine best-seller in its own right, praised for its clear, structured approach to mat-based Pilates. Ungaro breaks each exercise down with step-by-step photography and at-a-glance overviews, building from beginner through to advanced across four programme levels. A strong choice for anyone who wants a proper, progressive home course rather than a one-off reference.

Pilates for Dummies — Ellie Herman A comprehensive, well-structured manual covering basic through advanced exercises, targeting the areas people most commonly want to work — core, thighs, and chest — with the thorough, methodical structure the "For Dummies" series is known for. A solid general-purpose choice if you want breadth as well as depth.

The Pilates Body — Brooke Siler Written by one of the most established names in Pilates teaching, this book leans into the method's body-shaping and toning reputation as much as its core-strengthening one. Clear, accessible instruction from someone trained directly in the Pilates lineage, making it a good pick for readers who want both credibility and practicality.

Pilates for Beginners — Katherine Corp A true starter guide — Corp takes readers back to basics with a home-based programme that builds in difficulty as your strength and confidence grow. Clear instructions, photographs, and checklists make this the most approachable option here for someone who has never tried Pilates before.

Which one should you choose?
Completely new to Pilates: Pilates for Beginners is the gentlest, most structured entry point. Want a full progressive home course: Pilates: Body in Motion takes you from beginner through advanced with a clear four-level structure. Want breadth — a comprehensive general reference: Pilates for Dummies covers the widest range of exercises and levels in one book. Interested in body shaping and toning as much as core strength: The Pilates Body leans into that side of the method specifically. Want to understand where Pilates actually comes from: Return to Life Through Contrology is the only one written by Joseph Pilates himself, and the natural choice once you already have some practice under your belt and want the philosophy behind it.

A couple of my favourites to add to the mix

Pilates Anatomy — Rael Isacowitz & Karen Clippinger

This is the book I point clinically-minded clients toward. Full-colour anatomical illustrations sit alongside each exercise, showing exactly which muscles are working and how, which turns abstract cueing into something visible. It bridges the gap between "feel your core engage" and actually understanding the mechanics behind that instruction — genuinely useful for anyone who wants to train with more precision, not just repetition.

Anatomy Trains — Thomas Myers
Not a Bowen or Pilates book specifically, but essential reading for anyone serious about how the body's soft tissue actually connects and communicates. Myers' myofascial "lines" reframe how you think about tension and compensation patterns — instead of treating a tight hamstring in isolation, you start seeing the chain it's part of. Dense in places, but it's shaped how a generation of bodyworkers and movement teachers think.

A practitioner's note
Books are genuinely useful for building understanding and structure into a home practice, but Pilates is a method that rewards feedback — on alignment, breath, and control — that a book alone can't give you. If you're using any of these to build a routine around an injury, post-surgical recovery, or a specific postural issue, it's always worth checking with your practitioner or an instructor before working through the exercises unsupervised.
