What is Reiki ? The word Reiki comes from Japan where the system was originally discovered and developed by Dr Usui. It means “ universal life force energy” and is referring to the energy that flows through all living things. The Chinese refer to this energy as Chi (Qi or Ki) , the Indians as Prana, the scientists as energy.
Everything we see around us, ourselves included, is made up of pure energy. On a subatomic level we comprise of atoms, made up of electrons, neutrons and protons – all particles of energy. This energy creates what we call our bodies. The food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe is also made up of energy and the quality of energy that we invite into our bodies can give us an abundant supply of energy or a poor supply of energy.
When there is an abundant supply of energy we are in good health with a natural and powerful flow of energy around us. However, in our stressful, time poor world where we often don’t nourish ourselves. This slows down and, in some instances, even blocks our energy flow. We can experience illness, complaints or disease with our physical, emotional or mental health. At these times we can feel unwell or off balance and our ability to allow this natural flow through the different systems of our body is significantly reduced.
By receiving Reiki you are receiving universal life force directly and in its purest form. This helps to balance the mind, body and spirit complex of your being. Reiki is not a religion, or a religious practice and the practitioner will respect your own personal doctrine. The practitioner may make suggestions to you after the treatment, within their professional capacity, to assist with your healing but as healing is always about you what is doing best for you, at a time that is right for you, it is up to you whether you follow through on those recommendations or not.
What happens during a Reiki session?
You will have a consultation with the practitioner who will invite you to share further your reasons for receiving Reiki. The practitioner will explain the process and ask if you have any specific needs or questions. This helps the practitioner decide on the type of session. You will be asked if you would like to receive Reiki. You are then invited to lie down fully clothed on a treatment table.
Be sure to let your practitioner know if you have any health condition that might impact your lying flat on your back or front or if you have any areas, you are sensitive to touch. The practitioner will place their hands on you or over you in a variety of positions; they will either work their hands lightly in contact with your body or hands off depending upon your preference. Touch will always be appropriate and if you feel uncomfortable at any time you should clearly inform your practitioner.
The universal life force energy then flows through the practitioner and you will receive this and it will flow to where you need it most. You may experience an energy boost, or feelings of calmness and tranquility or both at the same time. The practitioner may play soft music or also use other additional healing support such as crystals, but this will be agreed with you beforehand. It is within your interest for optimum healing to discuss your session openly with your practitioner. A professional Practitioner will keep all aspects of your session confidential unless they have contacted you to ask permission to share this with a training group, where it should also be kept confident.
What are the different levels of Reiki practitioner? There are three levels of Reiki practitioner.
Level 1 is a person who has trained at a novice practitioner level and can give Reiki to another being or animal. They can work with friends and family but not within professional practice until they have gained a Level 2 qualification. However, you may want to give a donation or gift to your practitioner as a way of expressing your thanks. Please note that some health care practitioners such as osteopaths, nurses and massage therapists use Reiki within their treatment protocol but are also qualified as practitioners within their own right. Please talk further to your practitioner to gain more insight. Level 2 is a person who has trained to practitioner level, and they will usually have a fee for their session which you will have been informed of in advance. Level 3 is a person who has trained to a higher practitioner level and may also teach Reiki to other people. They will usually have a fee for their session which you will have been informed of in advance
Your Reiki practitioner is Level 3 master Teacher.
